Dr. Bob Alotta thinks of himself as a hyphen. The old story about "been there, done that" applies to him. He's a journalist, author of a number of books, newspaper and magazine articles, radio and television productions. He's been a radio talk show host--interviewing the famous, and not-so-famous, guest on network television, including "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings," the "McNeil-Lehrer Report" and "The Mike Douglas Show." From journalism to public relations was a natural step for him. His interest in history led him to become a strong advocate of historic preservation.
After a career in public relations, he entered the academic world, teaching journalism, public relations and history. Later, he discovered a talent at designing web pages, a talent he currently employs for businesses, non-profits and individuals.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Dr. Bob is a graduate of LaSalle College--now University. The only things he learned in college, he says, were the ability to think and how to communicate those thoughts. He began his journalism career with The Philadelphia Inquirer, then the Philadelphia Daily News. His newspaper experience was interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Army Security Agency. He went on to the Pennsylvania Railroad to help launch high-speed transportation between New York and Washington. He was part of the largest transportation merger--the combination of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central, which became Penn Central...and the world's largest transportation bankruptcy!
He left the railroad, after staging "The World's Largest Auction of Railroad Memorabilia," and joined the Frank Rizzo Administration as director-public information at the Philadelphia Housing Authority. He only planned six months there, but spent ten years! While at the Housing Authority, he began graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, earning his master's degree in American Civilization in one year. He then went on to Temple University, earning a doctorate in military history in four years. He accomplished all this while holding down a full-time job. He even wrote a book while in graduate school!
Dr. Bob then joined the faculty of Grand Valley State College--now University, in Allendale, Mich. He went on to Mississippi State University and James Madison University. He developed Metropolitan College, the evening college at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and worked on a capital murder case in New Orleans.
He's now the webmaster for the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office and an adjunct professor at Blue Ridge Community College, Weyers Cave, Va., where he teaches criminal justice and history.
As we've said, Dr. Bob Alotta has "been there, done that."
